The one-year fellowship in Cardiac Anesthesia and Perioperative Transesophageal Echo is committed to providing the highest quality training for the future leaders and practitioners of cardiac anesthesia. Our diverse program ensures fellows receive a broad clinical and educational experience in the operating room, CV-ICU, hybrid operating suites, and echocardiography labs. On average, 1,700 cardiac cases are completed per year at the Hamilton General Hospital in the operating room with approximately 40% of these being valve cases.

Educational Objectives of Clinical Fellowship
Upon completion of training, the fellow is expected to function as a competent specialist in Cardiac Anesthesia & Advanced Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography capable of an enhanced practice in these areas of focused competence, within the scope of Anesthesiology and Echocardiography. They must acquire a working knowledge of the theoretical basis of these disciplines, including its foundations in the sciences and research. The practice of Cardiac Anesthesia & Advanced Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography also includes, but is not limited to, the responsibility for:
- Patient risk assessment both for elective and emergency procedures, communication of findings as appropriate to patients/family.
- Anesthetic planning and management as appropriate to the case scenario.
- Selection, performance, interpretation, and appropriate communication of findings of different support diagnostic resources in cardiac surgical patients as well as perioperative transesophageal echocardiography.
- Prevention, recognition and management of complications related to the practice of Cardiac Anesthesia & Advanced Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography.
- Advancement of the discipline of Cardiac Anesthesia & Advanced Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography through scholarship and education.
Evaluation Procedure (frequency, method of evaluation, and report)
- Daily evaluation by the attending anesthesiologist.
- Monthly meetings with Immediate Supervisor and bi-yearly meeting with Department Chair.
It is understood that clinical functions will be pursued during this appointment and therefore a valid educational (or independent) license is required.
Clinical:
- ICU call shifts
- 1 weekday overnight per month (with the assumption they will be in the OR during the day).
- 1 weekend 24 hour shift per month.
- Cardiac Anesthesia Call:
- 1 weekend cardiac anesthesia call (BOTH Saturday and Sunday elective hearts)/month.
- These are not necessarily 24-hour call shifts, but a fellow may stay later (up to 24 hours) for interesting cases (dissections) with a postcall day if the fellow is present after 11pm.
In summary – monthly call expectations:
- 1 weekday night call in ICU
- 1 weekend 24 hour call in ICU
- 1 weekend (Saturday and Sunday) in the OR for weekend cardiac emergency cases.
Educational:
- Weekly TEE reading rounds
- Weekly cardiac surgery rounds
- Monthly cardiac anesthesia rounds
- Other Departmental rounds, i.e. CityWide, Pain, Pediatric, Clinical Improvement, etc.
All fellows are required to teach learners academic day lectures and Simulation.
