This educational framework is in line with the CanMEDS competencies that emphasize interactive, competency-based education as well as a focus on PS/QI that was recently added to the CanMEDS guidelines in 2015.

All fellows will participate in quality improvement rounds, hospital and department based quality initiatives, national and international quality improvement conferences, and mentoring to produce scholarly publications.

Service commitment: 100 days per year (subject to change according to department fellowship policies). Fellows will be exposed to all clinical areas to broaden their exposure to quality improvement and patient safety opportunities. Academic time will be granted to encourage scholarly activities in quality improvement and patient safety.

Call commitment:  Although fellows are not on the call schedule, fellows may be expected to be available out of hours (evenings, nights and weekends).

Structure: Two days of the week will be protected academic time, devoted to the QI project, the remaining three days a week will involve clinical duties at HHS hospitals, with the focus of understanding QI and patient safety opportunities in everyday clinical work
