Regional Anesthesia Fellowship

The HHS Regional Anesthesia Fellowship is designed to assist the fellow in achieving a set of academic and clinical goals that, when mastered, will enable a successful career in the practice of regional anesthesia.

The fellow is expected to first master his or her regional skills, and then impart these skills to other residents and colleagues. The fellow is also expected to be involved in a clinical research project and various academic activities throughout the years.

Hospital Site

Fellowship training will primarily take place at Hamilton Health Sciences Hospital and St. Joseph’s Hospital. Subspecialty training will be roughly divided between the four hospital locations, although this is flexible depending on clinical exposure attained.

12 months

Qualifications

We consider candidates who meet the following four criteria:

  1. Completion of anesthesiology residency training, or current anesthesiology residency training in good standing and targeted for completion before the beginning of fellowship training.
  2. Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians of Canada or targeted for RCSPC-eligible status by the beginning of fellowship training.
  3. Completion of Residency Training in Canada
  4. Completed admission application documentation (see below)

Additional Requirements

Application Checklist: a completed application includes…

  • Completed McMaster Postgraduate Application Form
  • Copy of Medical Degree
  • Copy of Medical School Transcripts
  • Copy of either Medical Council of Canada Exams results or copy of Certificate of Specialty
  • Government/Hospital/other agency letter of sponsorship
  • Goals and Objectives Form (the program will provide this to the Postgraduate Office)
  • Proof of language proficiency for International medical graduates. Academic IELTS with a minimum score of 6.5 in each category and minimum of 7 overall score. TOEFL IBT test with an overall score of 96 and minimum of 24 in each category.
  • Three letters of recommendation, one of which must be from your current Residency Program Director, or equivalent (e.g., chief of anesthesia for those applicants currently in practice).
  • Cover letter with preferred starting date.
  • One-page letter of intent answering: Why do you want to do a regional anesthesia fellowship at McMaster? How will you contribute to the specialty of regional anesthesia?

Goals

Weekly assignment schedule split (unevenly) into:

  1. Subspeciality days [2 – 3 days] in specialty anesthesia. Fellows are assigned one- to- one with specialty anesthesia staff.
  2. Service days [2 days] in the operating room performing adult anesthesia lists. Fellows are assigned to an OR list and operate independently while being covered by anesthesia staff operating in another adjacent OR
  3. Non-clinical days (NCDs) or academic days [1 day]: This granted according to the fellow’s academic engagement (research, teaching, journal clubs etc..).

II. On call duty:  

  • 2 weekdays and 1 weekend per month. 
  • Fellows are assigned on-call at the Juravinski hospital from 17:00 pm- 8:00 am. 
  • Fellows are assigned with anesthesia staff working in the OR. 
  • The next day is post-call
