Affiliated with the Michael G. DeGroote Pain Clinic and St. Joseph’s Healthcare King Street Site, Hamilton, the programmes have the highest volumes of pain patient visits in Canada. The one-year fellowship in Pain Medicine is committed to providing the highest quality training for the future leaders and practitioners in the management of pain. Our diverse program ensures fellows receive a broad clinical and educational experience.

Qualifications

FRCA or equivalence; or FRCPC or eligibility; or completed specialist Anesthesia training with MCCEE or equivalence and must be a qualified Anesthetist.

The Chronic Pain Fellows are included with the Pain Medicine Residency learners.  You get one-on-one training with world-renowned pain physicians; the curriculum includes MSK Ultrasound Workshops, access to Pain Learning Exchange (PLEX) sessions; virtual inter-institutional learning and collaboration; Simulation and Simulation teaching and are included in the Interventional Cadaver sessions.

Call Schedule

Weekly assignment schedule split (unevenly) into the below.  This is subject to change at the discretion of the Fellowship Director.

  • Subspeciality days [3 – 4 days] in Chronic Pain. Fellows are assigned one-on-one with specialty anesthesia staff.
  • Service days [1 day] in the operating room performing adult anesthesia lists. Fellows are assigned to an OR list and operate independently while being covered by anesthesia staff operating in another adjacent OR
  • Non-clinical days (NCDs) or academic days [1 day]: This is granted according to the fellow’s academic engagement (research, teaching, journal clubs, etc.)

On-call duty – on average:

  • 1 weekend per month
  • Fellows are assigned on-call at the Juravinski Hospital from 5:00 pm- 8:00 am
  • Fellows are assigned with anesthesia staff working in the OR
  • The next day is post-call.
